Engine Shaft also known as Mellanear Shaft

These photographs were taken by the late Russell Webber in March 1997 on the site opposite Tolry Garage. Russell was a very keen local historian from St Erth who researched the history and took many photographs of the remains of all local mines. Sadly he died in 2017 and his wealth of local history material has yet to be searched.

These two photos show the only remaining visible shaft of Mellanear mine. They show the wooden lining still in situ.

The photos show the view when cleared. You can see Hayle in the background with the A30 bypass in the middle ground and somewhere in between is the site of the Harvey's Mellanear Smelting works.
